Fostering a Supportive Environment

From Pride at McIntire and the Black Commerce Student Network to the Women’s Business Forum at McIntire, Smart Woman Securities at UVA, and the Latino Student Network, affinity groups offer a cohesive, supportive environment for underrepresented students of all backgrounds. The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion regularly partners with student groups to offer exploratory workshops on Commerce-related subjects, workplace preparation sessions, alumni networking opportunities, social meetups, and specific events such as Out at Work or #MeToo at McIntire.

This committee affirms the value of diversity, oversees the implementation of the strategic diversity initiatives, and seeks opportunities to engage with and improve McIntire’s culture and climate.

Stepping forward to serve as visible resources, McIntire faculty and staff have formed the McIntire Ally program, which supports all students, especially those who may feel marginalized by status or life experiences. Actively advocating on students’ behalf and available as mentors, McIntire Allies help them navigate the academic environment; reduce feelings of isolation; and provide a safe space to explore experiences, concerns, and solutions. These faculty and staff are interested in meeting and learning about student experiences, identities, challenges, and goals. Students are encouraged to reach out and get to know them one-on-one or through community dialogues and events.

At McIntire, we acknowledge and appreciate the many cultures and backgrounds that represent us. We engage in building awareness through celebrating National First Gen Day, International Pronouns Day, Veterans Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, Black History Month, and many other cultural observations.
