Professor Jill Mitchell teaches introductory financial and auditing courses and serves as a McIntire Teaching Fellow. Prior to joining the faculty at McIntire, she taught undergraduate and graduate accounting courses at Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University.  

Her teaching has been recognized at both the state and national levels, including the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the American Accounting Association(AAA)/J. Michael and Mary Anne Cook/Deloitte Foundation Prize, the foremost recognition of an individual who consistently demonstrates the attributes of a superior teacher in the discipline of accounting.  

Professor Mitchell serves on the leadership team of the Future Accountants Sponsoring Organization (FASO) Principles Task Force, a national initiative focused on strengthening the pipeline of future accounting professionals through high-impact teaching and course design. She has served on the board of directors for the Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA), as president of the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA), Washington, DC, Chapter, and as co-chair of the AAA Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting (CTLA).  

A former auditor with EY and co-author of several introductory accounting textbooks, Professor Mitchell integrates her professional experience, instructional design background, and service to the profession to create meaningful learning experiences. Her teaching philosophy is grounded in honor, opportunity, and professionalism, with a commitment to helping students become independent learners and thoughtful, ethical professionals.
