The University of Virginia invited all alumni, parents, and friends to an engaging evening reception and panel discussion hosted by the Karsh Institute of Democracy, McIntire School Center for Global Commerce, and UVA Club of London.
This timely panel discussion brought together diverse perspectives from the United States, Europe, and Asia to explore the future of democratic capitalism. As the world witnesses a record number of people participate in democratic elections this year, the conversation around the challenges and opportunities facing our economic and political systems has never been more urgent. The panelists, with extensive experience in policy-making, finance, academia and journalism, shared unique insights into the trends, strategies, and ideas that will shape the future of democratic capitalism.

Meet the Speakers
Melody Barnes
As the Founding Executive Director of the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy, Melody Barnes guides the organization on an action-oriented path to realizing democracy in both principle and practice. In addition to her role at the Karsh Institute, Barnes is the J. Wilson Newman Professor of Governance at UVA’s Miller Center of Public Affairs and a Distinguished Fellow at the UVA School of Law.
Syaru Shirley Lin
Syaru Shirley Lin is Founder and Chair of the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation (CAPRI), a new policy think tank conducting interdisciplinary, comparative research on innovative policies that can strengthen resilience and improve governance in the Asia Pacific. She is also Research Professor at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings.
Martin Wolf
Martin Wolf is Chief Economics Commentator at the Financial Times, London. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2000 “for services to financial journalism.”
Peter Maillet
Peter Maillet brings strong strategy, general management, and finance backgrounds to the McIntire School of Commerce, as well as international expertise, having worked for nearly 20 years in the global financial services industry as an investment banker, business manager, and private equity investor.
Nicole Thorne Jenkins
An award-winning educator and researcher who joined the McIntire School in July 2020 after her tenure as the Von Allmen Chaired Professor of Accountancy and Vice Dean at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics, Nicole Thorne Jenkins is an expert in the areas of financial reporting, organizational strategy, and valuation.
