Rolls-Royce/McIntire Essay Contest Winners Announced

April 25, 2008—An essay by Suraj Jain (McIntire ’09) was recently selected for the top prize in the third annual Rolls-Royce/McIntire Essay Competition, held during the spring 2008 semester. All third-year McIntire students were invited to write an essay on how global business can preserve its code of ethics in a flat world. Jain won the first-place prize of a $1,000 Visa gift card.

Rolls-Royce awarded Carina Reichelt (McIntire ’09) the second-place prize of $500. Jervis Bay (McIntire ’09), who placed third, also received $500.

“Rolls-Royce is very proud of its relationship with McIntire and has come to expect very high standards in its annual business ethics essay competition,” said Mike Elliott, Vice President of Financial Planning and Group Treasurer for Rolls-Royce North America and key liaison between Rolls-Royce and the Comm School. “With a record number of entries, 2008 was no exception, but the panel of judges agreed that Suraj Jain’s essay was a clear winner. Suraj recognized the complexity of the issue but was able to identify practical steps that a complex global business could take to ensure that its code of ethics is maintained across the organization. Rolls-Royce NA will be exploring Suraj’s ideas further in the coming months.”

Janette Martin, Assistant Professor of Management Communication and contest coordinator, added, “Through the essay contest, Rolls-Royce has challenged our third-year students to grapple with the thorny issue of maintaining business ethics in a globalized world. Now in its third year, the contest has consistently brought out the best in our students’ writing and critical thinking. We had exceptionally strong essays this year, and we thank everyone who entered. We congratulate our winners for their accomplishment.”

In addition to Elliott, judges included a panel of Rolls-Royce North America Inc. executives at the company’s Chantilly, Va., location.
