All Commerce Students Invited to Submit Entries to the Madhu Chopra Writing Contest

DUE DATE: 2 p.m., Thursday, March 25, 2004

First Prize: $300
Second Prize: $150

March 16, 2004—Madhu Chopra was a dedicated, spiritual Commerce student tragically killed in the summer of 1988. Madhu's parents annually sponsor a writing contest in her memory. Any Commerce student may enter.

You are invited to reflect on a special person or experience at McIntire that has increased your responsibility and concern for others. Submit a poem, short story, or essay that reflects, even indirectly, this changed perception.  Writing will be judged anonymously on originality, creativity, self-awareness, and use of language. Entries may be no longer than eight double-spaced pages.

For more information, please contact Ms. Janette Martin, Business Communication Instructor, Monroe Hall 264, or e-mail her at JMM5NG@virginia.edu

Entries are due by 2 p.m., Thursday, March 25, 2004
in the Student Services Office, Monroe Hall 136. Complete an entry form in Monroe Hall 136, and omit your name from your submission

2003 Madhu Chopra Contest Winners--Excerpts

First place: Kristin Smolen, for her poem "Blue Irises"

I often dream that I sleep
in a field of blue irises
who sway under a piercing sky. . .

Second place: Cara Unterkofler, for her poem "Migration"

Once they arrive
they feel it.
To travel any less distance
to conceive of any fewer hours
would be tampering with survival. . .

Third place: Hillary Whyard, for her poem "Company Man--of David S.
Ridley, VP of Southwest Airlines"

He spoke of fortunes
costs
successes to envy.
And I listened, very closely
To whispers of wealth. . .

Other 2003 entries included the following:

  • A short essay advocating more classroom discussion of political events

  • A poem about evolving through group work interactions

  • An essay about cultural dislocation and learning on a McIntire trip to South Africa

  • A poem about leadership

  • A short argument about what one really learns at McIntire

  • A poem about how the McIntire experience sharpens the five senses
