Transitioning to the University

 English for Academic Purposes

We strongly recommend that international students consider taking advantage of a summer language institute offered by the University of Virginia. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is an intensive language and culture course designed for non-native speakers of English who have been admitted to an undergraduate or graduate degree program at the University of Virginia. Participants fine tune the language skills required for success in U.S. higher education through exercises in academic writing, academic reading and vocabulary development, listening comprehension and note taking, classroom discussion strategies, and presentation skills. Throughout the EAP program, participants work with content from their intended field of study or research.

 Language Consultant Program

Student language consultants are native speakers of English who are interested in getting to know international students, staff, and scholars. Once you arrive at the University, they offer you the opportunity to practice your English, learn more about U.S. culture, and make new friends. Most conversation groups will consist of one student language consultant and 1-2 international students, staff, or scholars. Conversation groups meet 1 hour per week beginning in September until the last week of classes for the fall semester. To learn more contact the Center for American English Language and Culture at 434-924-3372 or caelc@virginia.edu.
