To Set up an IMAP Connection

  1. In Outlook Express, the following screen will appear the first time you run the program. If you do not see this screen, From within Outlook Express click the Tools menu and choose accounts. Click the add button and select Mail.
     

  2. An Internet Connection Window Appears.  Enter your name and click next:


     

  3. Enter you Email Address (USERID@comm.virginia.edu) and click next


     

  4. Change the Incoming mail server setting to IMAP. 
    Your incoming mail server is: webmail.comm.virginia.edu
    Your outgoing mail server depends on your location:
     
    a. Adelphia Users must use Mail.adelphia.com

    b. Sprint DSL Users must use SMTP.Earthlink.net

    c. UVa Dialup users must use SMTP.MAIL.VIRIGNIA.EDU

    d. Ntelos (Cornerstone) Users must use MAIL.NTELOS.NET

    Contact your Internet Service Provider if yours is not listed.


     

  5. Your account name is MCINTIRE\USERID, and your password is the same one you use to log in at McIntire


     
  6. Click Finish

Securing your IMAP Connection

  1. In Outlook Express, click on the Tools menu and select Accounts


     

  2. Click Properties, and select the advanced tab


     

  3. Check the box under incoming mail that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"


     

  4. Click OK, then Click Close
     

  5. Your Mail is now encrypted when it is downloaded from the server.

Troubleshooting IMAP Connections

Possible Problem What to Check Solution Contact
I cannot send of receive mail Are you connected to the internet?  You must have an established internet connection before attempting to connect to the VPN server Connect to the Internet If your internet connection is down, contact your Internet Service Provider
I can receive mail, but I cannot send any mail Your SMTP server must depends on where you are connecting. 

a. Adelphia Users must use Mail.adelphia.com
b. Sprint DSL Users must use SMTP.Earthlink.net
c. UVa Campus and Dialup users must use SMTP.MAIL.VIRIGNIA.EDU
d. Ntelos (Cornerstone) Users must use MAIL.NTELOS.NET

Use correct SMTP info McIntire Helpdesk (434) 924 7988
Error: Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain. Check your userID and password carefully.  It is the same information used to log into webmail (https://webmail.comm.virginia.edu/exchange) Enter Correct Login Information McIntire Helpdesk (434) 924 7988 if you have forgotten your password
